Many of us don’t realize it—until it’s too late and definitely too dirty—that a priest’s or deacon’s vestments do get dirty over time. This can feel surprising, especially since they’re only worn a handful of times each month and much of the service seems to be spent standing reverently in the altar, praying.

So where does the dirt come from?

Think about it: coal and incense, candles and wax, and—inevitably—sweat. Add time and movement, and even the whitest tonia begins to tell its story.

That’s when you may pause and wonder: How do I clean vestments that have been prayed in, that may have touched holy vessels, and that have stood before the altar of our Lord Jesus Christ? And just as importantly—how do I do this without damaging the beautiful embroidery and colorful designs stitched into the fabric?

You’re not alone. With a little care and intention, you can clean vestments safely and respectfully. Here’s how.

How You Can Clean a Priest’s or Deacon’s Vestments

1. Start with a Water Soak- Fill a small tub with plain water. Gently place the vestments inside and let them soak for a few minutes. Wring them out completely while still in the tub. Dispose of the water by pouring it onto grass or into running water, out of reverence.

2. Spot Clean- Carefully Do not wash the Taylasana (the priest’s hat). It contains cardboard

inside, and washing it will cause damage. For all other garments, gently spot clean any visible stains as needed.

3. Use a Gentle Wash Cycle- Place all washable vestments (everything except the hat) into the washing machine. Select a gentle cycle and use your regular or mild detergent.

4. Dry with Care- For best results, tumble dry on low heat or air dry. Once dry, your vestments are ready to be ironed and prepared once again for service at the altar.

Caring for vestments is more than routine cleaning—it’s an act of reverence. These garments carry prayer, serve the altar, and reflect the beauty of our worship. When you care for them with intention, you honor both the vestments themselves and the sacred service they support.
